How to Write Better Blog Posts

What stands out to me the most when I read your posts is that your form is almost perfect. You have an excellent command of the English language. It is evident from your writing that you have read extensively.
You should seriously consider a career in writing. Take your previous post, for example, Coming to America. If you were to develop the content in that post alone, and expand it out, you have the makings of a pretty good book. It would be timely, relavent to current events, and interesting to read. It's something you should really consider. You definitely have the knack.

I'm not a good writer. It says so at the top of my blog. That get's me off the hook.

Blogger Cinthia said...
Jagular -- Thank you for your inspiring comments. I really hope that one day I can put these suggestions into practice!

Surge84 -- I disagree. You are a good writer. Through your writing, one can tell who you are as a person and can connect to your experiences.

I think that being a great writer doesn't necessarily make you a good blogger. If your readers can't connect to you through your writing, then you might as well be writing to the trees. It is so important that your personality emerge from your words because your readers otherwise have no idea of knowing what kind of person you really are!

I think you're doing just that, Surge84, and you should be proud of yourself for that!

My tip is this: Your blog is your house and it's your rules. Anyone who doesn't like it can go read a supermarket tabloid.

I can't wait to hear how you met Baloo!!

Thank you for all your kind words Cinthia!

Good points!

Hmmm...I think I routinely break the majority of those rules. But I've always been a little bit of a rule-breaker when I thought I could get away with it. :)

Blogger Gary said...
I can't find anything wrong with what you said. Excellent tips.

Blogger erikku said...
Thank you, Cinthia, very informative. Any tips on leaving comments?

Blogger menrva said...
Great tips! I'll definitely use them myself.

I have one more tip to add: Try not to blog while drunk. :)

Blogger Heidi said...
Cinthia , this is great info..Thankyou for sharing.

I'm also very critical about my blog writing...Deleted many, and missed numerous typos..Sometimes I wish people would let me know so I don't feel like a fool.. Ugh.

Blogger nanadc said...
i want to know how you met baloo. been meaning to ask that question for some time now anyway...
thanks for the tips on blogging.

Blogger Michelle said...
Hey Cinthia, thanks for the tips. Your posts are always thoughtful :o)

A good cheat sheet on writing an engaging blog. You certainly keep yours interesting and engaging. Thanks for the tips!

Blogger teahouse said...
Very cute! Thanks for the good tips.

Yeah, I try to edit, edit, edit so that my posts are as short and sweet as possible. It's often very hard to do!

Blogger Mike said...
This is a perfectly written post about perfectly writing posts! Well done! Two typos though... ;)

I think the design of a blog is extremely important too. When I'm blog surfing, I don't even stop to look at poorly designed sites. They have to catch my eye without distracting me from reading. A difficult thing to balance...

Now I'm off to re-design my site :)

Those are some good ideas, I will keep them in mind.
Got a question for you, there is a post I made with a video for the song Paradise (not for me), there is a certain part in the song where she speaks lines in french. Since you speak it, could you translate it for me? That would be so awesome, Ive always wondered what she was saying there, lol!
Thnx Cin!

Great tips!

I wish I could write well. I tend to be better at writing research papers and such versus more free and thoughtfull things. I do enjoy your posts though and hope you continue to write! :)

Thanks for the tips. I think my blog needs some work. It might help. Ha ha ha ha

Thanks for these tips. They are coming in handy...

Cinthia - good post that actually goes a bit deeper and has more meaningful suggestions than the normal "how to blog successfully" posts out there.

Blogger Cinthia said...
Erikku -- Comments, good question. I like comments that are heartfelt, witty, interesting or useful, which luckily for me, you guys leave me all the time! :) Thank you!

Viking -- Two typos?! I knew I couldn't get away without using the spell checker. Ok, I saw I made a typo on 'restlessly,' but where's the second culprit? I won't rest until I find it! :)

Marko -- You're giving me homework, aren't you? No problem, I'll do it. I'm heading to bed now, but I should be able to do it sometime tomorrow evening.

Josey -- I love your blog the way it is! Ha ha ha ha Stay funny!

Hello! I haven't been this way for a while, I just wanted to say I particulary enjoyed the posts below.

oooh, I can't wait to hear about Baloo!

and while I found your tips very informative and helpful, I find that I like to write my blog without any rules or guidelines! No real purpose or goal... just whatever I feel like sharing at the time...
but you know, that's me!
I've always chose to ignore the rules

(see, like not putting periods at the end)

Blogger Cinthia said...
Lucky Lum -- Most people probably prefer spontaneity, too! I happen to be the kind of person that can't survive without guidelines. I just thought I'd share what guidelines I followed for blogging with other people :)

Blogger Pomme said...
Posting baby pictures is a crowd-pleaser as well. That's why I'm trying to get pregnant.

Just kidding. ;)

Blogger Cinthia said...
And let's not forget cute pet pictures. The day I get a kitten is the day my blog will get twice as many women visitors. :)

Blogger Pomme said...
Hee! That's why I posted pictures of not one but two adorable pets on my blog today. Seriously though, as adorable as they are, wasn't just pimping them. But yeah, just like Hollywood pets and kids rule the roost.

Blogger Sandra said...
Great tips Cinthia! Your blog is always a good read, your efforts work!
Looking forward to hearing about Baloo!

Thanks for these excellent tips, Cinthia. I'll try to incorporate these into an upcoming post at BusinessBlogWire.

Thanks for spending time writing those tips, they clarify a lot of things and are a great insight!!

Blogger Maritza said...
Excellent tips, especially about the spelling!

You're boyfriend's name is Baloo? Did you grow up in the jungle raised by wolves?

Good ideas for blogging, but far too many rules for me to remember! Plus with the way the thoughts swirl in my head, it's usually a little hard to stick to one topic.

Make sure you include the word panties in every post so you get hit by blog searchers. HAHAHA

Blogger talksmart said...
Really great tips! This is one of the reasons why I keep on visiting your blog :-)

Thanks for all those great tips. I always love reading your blog ... sorry it has taken me so long to comment this week !!
Take care, Meow

I often try to stick to the adage "short and sweet" but it almost never turns out that way:(

I do find, however, that some of my best blog posts are of what the "whatever comes to mind variety".

Blogger The Taorist said...
Wow! We ARE kindred spirits! It's a much more superior piece of post than mine. Bravo!
Now if I could only belly dance......

Blogger cream said...
Great post! Viking is a jolly joker, isn't he?

Blogger Mathieu said...
:D This stuff is solid gold ;)
Thanks for all the tips, although I could figure out by myself (I study journalism, so I'm supposed to understand good writing) and I don't pay attention to these things for my personal journal anyway. Partly because I'm lazy, partly because if I alter too much, if I want to make each post complete Beauty, it wouldn't be who I am anymore. I ám a boy who writes chaotic, basic, simple, complete with grammar mistakes and spelling errors.
But maybe it's different for an online journal than a blog. I'd like to keep both, but it just doesn't work. I put most of my energy in my blurty journal (www.blurty.com/users/benvolio), which leaves little room for a solid blog.
But I love the tips, and I know they will come in handy one time or another. And they seem to work, too, you have a great blog!
xxx
Mathieu

Good tips!

Great stuff. Having ADD I litterally cannot read long posts...sometimes I think it's better to break them into parts and post them at different times. I'm big on short posts or broken up in a way it's easy to read, adding pictures when I feel it works with the post and trying to respond to comments or even visiting a blog that's commented :D

Blogger Chic Mommy said...
nice post. I'm going to bookmark it.

Those are good tips.
